Bokaj Patience Apron
Despite its thorny outside, the cactus is much loved in Palestine. The plant can flourish in dry, harsh conditions, and is renowned for its ability to survive droughts. For Palestinians, the cactus symbolises patience and resilience. The artwork was drawn in Gaza by artist Hiba Abu Kwaik in 2024, amidst the ongoing genocide.
This apron undertook a long and difficult journey to reach so-called Australia, navigating restrictions and borders along the way. To wear it is to connect with a legacy of resilience, land, and care — rituals of Palestinian daily life carried across generations and now across continents.
